Methods of modifying the vulnerability of a volcanic hazard

'Modifying the vulnerablility' of a hazard means changing peoples' behaviour to make the hazard less risky.

Clear evacuation plans have been issued to Mount Etna and the helipad in the centre of the photograph highlights the advanced level of community preparedness in this region.

Rapid evacuation by air has meant you have to go as far back as 1979 to witness the last deaths (demographic impact) recorded as a direct result of a volcanic eruption, where 9 people lost their lives close to the main crater.
